Attending an NA meeting as a non-addict

Last night, my wife and I attended an NA meeting at a sober living facility. This meeting doubled as a 7th anniversary of her brother's sobriety. I've watched him better himself, help others, repay his debts to friends and family, and create himself a family of his own. He's worked really hard and we're super proud of him.

It was interesting to sit in the circle during the meeting and hear everyone talk about their journeys and their struggles. Some people were just beginning to battle their demons, some were years into the fight and still struggling every day, and some had been sober for decades. Some folks found peace in God, some in family, and some in their hobbies. A few hadn't found peace yet.

But there was one theme running through everyone's speech, and that was "connection is the cure for addiction". While it's not to be taken literally as everyone acknowledges there is no cure for addiction, every single person there had a story about how someone helped them, or how they helped someone else. Whether or not you're an addict, we're all struggling with something one way or another, but we're all in this together.

"Connection is the cure" are words that everyone should remember when they're feeling alone and struggling. Our humanity is our greatest strength.
