Last Wednesday after work we gathered up 3 of our 4 kids, both dogs, packed up the car, and headed down to Chincoteague for our annual visit to my wife's parents' house on the eastern shore.
We spent a lot of time just relaxing on the back deck, listening to the birds and enjoying the cool breeze off of the Chesapeake Bay. A few times we jumped into the canal for a swim, or got into the kayaks to paddle around a bit. On Saturday, my father-in-law took the girls and I out onto the bay on his boat. It had been calm all morning but right before we left the wind picked up, and some white caps started forming in the bay, so we had to take it easy and reduce our speed. The girls each got to drive the boat for a bit, and as soon as we pulled out of the canal into the bay, we were treated to views of a small pod of dolphins jumping out of the water. We followed them for a while from a distance, until we could no longer see them, but it was quite a cool experience.
We also spent a short amount of time at the community pool, and went to Chincoteague Island to visit the clothing shops, souvenir stores, and candy shops. We got lunch on the island where there are several restaurants adjacent to each other. Everyone got street tacos except myself and one of my daughters. We opted for the Japanese-Korean food, and had bulgogi with japchae. It was amazing! After lunch we stopped by the pony pen to see what ponies were there this year. We were lucky enough to see an albino pony! She was so beautiful!
We had a wonderful time, and we feel extremely fortunate that we have family to visit in such a beautiful place. My wife and I may go back down there with just the dogs in the fall, so we can do some different things and explore some other towns down there.
